All Home Owners & Private Tenants Can Claim A Grant

With most DIY stores now offering discounted home insulation, it may at first glance appear to be a good deal. Offers such as 'Buy One Get One Free' might seem attractive but in most cases, it works out cheaper to have it professionally installed under Government-backed grant schemes. Loft insulation grant schemes also include several extras such as pipe lagging and draught proofing the hatch.

Don't Wait To Insulate..

  • The UK has just experienced the coldest Winter for 40 years.
  • Tens of thousands of people applied for Home Insulation Grants.
  • Many applicants experienced long waiting times of up to 3 months.
  • In the Spring and Summer, waiting time can be as little as 1-2 weeks.

Free Insulation grants are available to private households where anyone is aged 70 and above or anyone is in receipt of certain benefits, tax credits or allowances. All other home owners and private tenants will still qualify for a substantial discount.

You Might Qualify To Have Insulation Fitted For FREE!

If you own property or rent from a private landlord, you will be entitled to a Home Insulation Grant, even if you are in employment. Without a grant and having it professionally fitted

Thinking Of Space Blankets? Think Again!

Many people do not realise that the current Government recommendation for loft insulation is a depth of 270mm. Insulation is typically laid by fitting 100mm between the joists and then 170mm cross-laid at right angles. This is also the case for 'Space Blanket' loft insulation. One layer simply won't suffice. Whilst it has the advantage of it being easier to install, it is incredibly expensive when fitted properly. Note that the grant scheme does not provide funding for Space Blankets but 270mm of traditional insulation is just as effective as a double layered Space Blanket. Typical costs for Space Blanket insulation are:

N.B. YOU CANNOT HAVE SPACE BLANKETS FITTED UNDER THE GRANT SCHEME.

It's Cheaper With A Grant And You Get More

It not only works out cheaper to have the insulation fitted under a Government-backed grant scheme but there are several additional extras included. During the Winter months, the loft will become much colder so any pipes must be lagged to prevent them from freezing. The same applies to cold water tanks. The grant schemes also include draught proofing and insulating the hatch, in addition to fitting a walkboard if you have a tank that is more than one metre from the hatch:

Included In The Loft Insulation Grant Schemes
  • Insulation installed or topped up to recommended depth of 270mm
  • Pipes lagged to reduce risk of freezing during Winter months
  • Loft hatch insulated by stapling a bag of insulation to it
  • Hatch fitted with draught proofing all around the edges
  • Hatch fitted with hooks & eyes to ensure a snug fit
  • Walk board fitted if cold water tank is over 1m from hatch

Sounds Too Good To Be True?

Insulation grant funding is provided by the six main Utility companies under the Carbon Emissions Reduction Target (CERT). The aim is to reduce carbon emissions from domestic properties by 2012. An insulation installer would carry out the work and then claim the grant amount for you. The grant schemes we arrange have a few basic rules:

What CAN Be Insulated Under The Grant Schemes
  • Domestic properties that are either owned or privately rented
  • Loft insulation laid out in 'blankets' on the floor of a loft
  • Lofts that typically have under 4" of insulation already installed
  • Cavity wall insulation 'blown in' between the two layers of brickwork
  • Must be fitted by approved insulation installers

The first stage of the process is for EnergyLink to arrange for a surveyor to carry out a FREE no-obligation survey of your home. The surveyor will make sure that the property can be insulated and also check that you are entitled to a grant. A written quotation will be provided and if you are willing to go ahead, the work will be carried out by one of our approved installers. Once the work is complete, they will claim the grant funding on your behalf.

What CANNOT Be Insulated Under The Grant Schemes
  • Council or Housing Association properties
  • Commercial, charity, community buildings, etc.
  • Loft insulation fitted to the sloping part of a roof
  • Lofts with over 4" of insulation already installed
  • Walls that do not have a cavity e.g. solid, stone built, etc.
  • Any other type of wall insulation e.g. internal or external
  • If you have done or you intend doing the work yourself

Reasons Not To DIY
There are 10 very good reasons not to install insulation yourself:
  • More Expensive
As demonstrated on our home page, it works out to be more expensive in most cases.
  • No Extras
The grant schemes include lagging of pipes & tanks; draught proofing & insulating the hatch and fitting a walk board.
  • Takes Longer
Insulating a loft yourself could take you most of a day. A professional installer can complete the work in around an hour.
  • Quality of Workmanship
Unless you are a seasoned DIY enthusiast, the quality of your finished job will not be up to the same standard.
  • Level of Fitness
It requires a reasonable level of fitness to climb through the hatch and tread around carefully.
  • Risk of Personal Injury
Lofts are dark, cramped and dangerous. The chances of banging your head or falling through the ceiling are great.
  • Greater Risk of Damage
Pipework can easily be burst and electrical cabling can be disturbed. There is also a good chance of damaging ceilings.
  • Dirty and Messy
Most lofts contain thick layers of dust and fibres from previously laid insulation.
  • Makes You Itch
It is a well known fact that laying insulation makes you itch. Professional installers are used to it.
  • Can't Do Cavity Walls
It is not possible to fit Cavity Wall Insulation yourself. It requires specialist equipment to blow the mineral wool in.
Did You Know...

The current Government recommendation for Loft Insulation is a depth of 270mm or 11". Lofts with no insulation will need two layers..
